The unstoppable Izzie Everest

Izzie is a truly inspirational teenager who is determined not to let her disability define her. With the support of her family and the dedicated team at Evelina London she’s already achieved what many thought impossible.

Izzie has been part of the Evelina London family since she was five. After being diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a baby, her doctors at the time said they didn’t know if she would ever be able to walk or talk.

“It was like being hit by a lorry,” said Izzie’s mum, Paula Everest. “But thanks to the dedicated, expert Evelina London team, Izzie has been able to follow her dreams.”

“Since I’ve had my operations at Evelina London, I’ve been more mobile… so I can carry on doing what I love. Evelina London has treated and supported me throughout most of my life, and has become my second home.”

From performing pioneering surgery on Izzie’s legs, to providing incredible ongoing rehabilitation, comfort and care – the devoted Evelina London team has been with Izzie and her family every step of the remarkable journey.

“I don’t let my disability define who I am,” says Izzie. “When I was little, my parents told me I can do anything I want, but I will just have to find a different way of doing it.”

And that’s exactly what she has done.

Incredible Izzie makes judo history

At the age of 11, inspirational Izzie won her first judo title and since then she has celebrated more than 10 international wins, including being a five-time European champion for disability and world judo champion.

In June 2024, the 17-year-old superstar and her partner, Braydon Robus, made history by becoming the first pair with adaptive needs to win a gold medal for Great Britain at the European adaptive kata championships in Sarajevo.

Compassionate, trailblazing care from the fantastic Evelina London team has helped Izzie achieve these amazing things. Evelina London was one of the first hospitals in the UK to pioneer ‘guided growth’ surgery. And Izzie was one of the first children to have this groundbreaking treatment to straighten her knees and improve her mobility.

Along with intense physiotherapy and further surgery, martial arts has really boosted her physical and mental health. “Since doing judo, my balance, core and arm strength have improved,” says Izzie. “It is also brilliant for my mental health, as when I’m at judo, no one ever asks me why I’m in a wheelchair; it’s nice to just be seen as me.”

“They say it takes a village to raise a child. Well, when you've got a child with a disability like Isabelle, that is true. It's taken us as a family, friends and the Evelina London to raise Isabelle. They are like a family, and they need to be immensely proud of being part of Isabelle's journey.”

Paralympic dreams

When she isn’t conquering the world of judo, Izzie is passionate about helping the incredible Evelina London team transform treatment and care for more children and families. In 2022, together with her orthopaedic surgeon, Mr Michail Kokkinakis, she abseiled 160 feet down St Thomas’ Hospital and raised more than £1,200 for Evelina London Children’s Charity.

Unstoppable Izzie now has her sights set on the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles as she continues to champion more inclusive sport. Currently, judo at the Paralympics is only for visually impaired athletes. But the determined teen hopes that by 2028 there will be a pathway for more people, like her, with a physical disability.

“I could not be prouder of Izzie and her fantastic achievements... The team and I can’t wait to see what she goes on to achieve next, and we know that she will continue to inspire children and young people at Evelina London.”
