Hamza's incredible care at Evelina London

Finding out her son Hamza had a serious heart condition was a scary time for Isata. Thanks to the incredible care at Evelina London, Hamza is now a happy 6 year old living life to the full.

Isata found out that Hamza had a serious heart condition when she went for her 20-week scan. She was referred to Evelina London, where the amazing, compassionate staff did all they could to reassure her and her partner. Dr Bell, Hamza’s doctor, explained what was happening and helped make a plan for Hamza’s birth. “He even drew us a picture of his little heart to make it easier for us to understand,” said Isata.

When he was born, Hamza was taken straight to the neonatal intensive care unit. He had to go for a balloon atrial septostomy, a procedure that widens a gap in the top wall of the heart to improve the circulation. “We were worried sick. He then had to have a second surgery, and like any mother would be, I was scared,” said Isata.

“Discovering my son’s arteries were the wrong way around at his 20-week scan shook our world to the core. Without surgery Hamza wouldn’t survive. My partner and I didn’t know how to process it or what to say to each other.”

"I feel great. I feel like my heart is fixed!"

Thanks to the incredible care he received at Evelina London, Hamza is now a happy six year old.

He still needs to visit Evelina London regularly for check-ups and it can sometimes be scary with the needles and noisy machines. But the dedicated play specialists are on hand to ease his worries. He recently told his mum, “I feel great. I feel like my heart is fixed!”

“No words can express how grateful I am to Evelina London for saving Hamza’s life.”
